Who We Are

LAURA TARBOX, CFP®, Founder & CEO

A UCLA graduate with 30+ years of investment and financial planning experience, Laura received her CFP® in 1984. She is President of The Tarbox Group, Inc., the fee-only wealth advisory firm she founded in 1985.

Laura has played a leadership role in financial education and taught investment, financial planning, and insurance classes in a variety of programs. In 1997, she was chosen from over 800 UCI Extension instructors to receive the Distinguished Instructor Award. Her teaching experience includes serving as:

• Program Director and Instructor, in the Financial Planning Certificate Program at UC Irvine
• Founder of the successful Financial Planning Internship Program at UC Irvine
• CFP Residency Program Dean at UC Irvine
• Adjunct Faculty of the College of Financial Planning, USC and California Lutheran University
• Instructor, Insurance and Investments for the California CPA Education Foundation

Laura has been sought after to serve on professional boards throughout her career. She is currently a member of the TD Ameritrade Elite Advisory Board, where members meet quarterly to weigh in on industry issues. She was recently appointed a Trustee of the Board of Foundation for Financial Planning, a national organization that supports pro bono financial planning. Laura has also served as a Director on the National Board of the Institute of Certified Financial Planners, and is a past President of the Orange County Society of the ICFP. Laura served on the Charles Schwab Institutional Advisory Board and the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards’ Board of Examiners.

Laura is a California Licensed Professional Fiduciary and a private trustee on several trusts.

Laura’s volunteer charitable activities include Founding Board Chair of the Laguna Beach Community Foundation, Treasurer of the Laguna Beach Schoolpower Endowment Fund, Laguna Canyon Foundation’s Gift and Estate Planning and Investments Committees, and Board member of ChildAid, a non-profit foundation dedicated to creating opportunity through literacy in the lives of Latin American children living in poverty.

Laura Tarbox has been recognized as one of the “Best Financial Advisors” in the country by Worth magazine since 1996. She was named one the country’s “100 Great Financial Planners” by Mutual Funds magazine in 2001 and 2002.

*Okay, maybe a slight exaggeration.The number of hours in 5 days that Laura, an accomplished hiker, spent  hiking with friends in the Aspen area this summer.  She enjoys local trails, but also big challenges.  She has bragging rights to completing the Four Pass loop around the Maroon Bells Mountains last summer.  To learn more about Laura’s Maroon Bells ascent Click here.

 


Laura is a member of two book clubs, and recently enjoyed “The Portable Veblen” by Elizabeth Mackenzie (about a quirky and dysfunctional but lovable family) and “The Light Keeper” by Abby Geni (very atmospheric, set in the Farrallon islands, off Santa Barbara).

 


is the age of Jane, Laura’s daughter. Jane will attend the Lincoln Center campus of Fordham University as a junior.   She balanced her time over the summer with work, hosting her friends from school, and attending  concerts, indulging her passion for music!

that Laura spends as an investment committee member of the Laguna Beach Community Foundation, down from 15 when she was helping to establish LBCF as the Founding Chair.  Laura has volunteered on many non-profit boards and investment committees and has been instrumental in the development of numerous investment policies for charitable organizations.
